The Beginning

I joined ConocoPhillips after receiving a master's degree in petroleum engineering at Heriot Watt University. ConocoPhillips sponsored me through this and although I didn’t have to join them, I chose to. I had already done a placement in Aberdeen and was quickly offered a job.

I joined their GRAD (global recruiting and development) scheme which gives me the chance to do yearly rotations in different business units. I also do a year abroad for an overview of different functions and to experience the many aspects of oil and gas reservoir engineering. In addition to a great career structure, the company offers other benefits like share schemes, flexi days and a great working environment. I enjoy life at ConocoPhillips and know I made the right decision to join the company.

My work at ConocoPhillips

I work in the Geology, Geophysics and Reservoir Engineering (GGRE) department, which serves all the business units. I presently work in the East Irish Sea (EIS) operating unit to supplement their reservoir engineering project. I plan to work in this group for a bit longer, and then move into reservoir simulation support.

EIS is an interesting new area for ConocoPhillips. The team is small, so I am involved in everything. It is also exciting because it is not well known, so we have a lot of high level management taking an interest in our work. What I enjoy most is that from day one with the company, I was given a job with responsibility. My work has been used for day-to-day dealings with partners and for internal budgeting and I really feel it has a purpose.

This is my second rotation; I initially worked for the Southern North Sea operating unit on the Victor field. The most rewarding project I undertook here was being involved in a contract re-negotiation for the sales method which increased the value by millions of pounds.

Career Development

I have had great career development at ConocoPhillips with courses in the United Kingdom, Norway, and the Uunited States. The work is different to what I did at University, but ConocoPhillips has helped me settle quickly by providing both formal and on-the-job training on an array of technical programmes. Development courses are available via an online system and their culture allows you to determine your own career development. My next course is a field class looking at reservoir modelling.

The Future

I hope to have a long future with ConocoPhillips. It is a great company with assets in amazing places around the world. In the future I’d like to go abroad for a year with the GRAD scheme, hopefully to Alaska. I’d also love to move to Norway as we have some big projects out there.
